What Is a Cold Box Core Making Machine? How Does It Work?

An overview of sand preparation, shaping, and gas curing in Cold Box core making machines.

A Cold Box core making machine shapes a sand mixture prepared with a binder inside a core box to produce cores for casting. The core defines the geometry of the internal cavity or passage required in the cast component.

Production involves preparing the sand mixture, blowing it into the core box, curing it with a suitable gas, and removing the core. The gas and binder must be compatible with the selected process. In phenolic urethane Cold Box applications, curing takes place through the catalytic action of amine gas.

Machine selection should consider sand shooting capacity, core box dimensions, core geometry, and target production volume. Appropriate control of sand preparation and gassing parameters supports repeatable production.
