What Is a Core Sand Preparation System? How Does It Work?

An overview of sand and binder dosing, uniform mixing, delivery to core making machines, and key considerations when selecting a core sand preparation system.

What Is a Core Sand Preparation System?

A core sand preparation system doses sand and binder components in specified proportions, mixes them uniformly and delivers the prepared mixture to core making machines.

In Cold Box core production, mixture consistency directly affects core quality. The system should be designed for the selected binder and the foundry’s production layout.

How Does a Core Sand Preparation System Work?

The process starts by feeding the required quantity of sand into the mixer. Resin and other binder components are dosed separately according to the selected recipe. The materials are mixed for a suitable period to obtain a uniform mixture.

The prepared mixture is then transferred directly to a machine hopper or through a suitable distribution arrangement. Further batches are prepared according to machine demand.

Why Is Sand and Resin Dosing Important?

Sand and resin dosing keeps the binder proportion at the intended level in each batch. Quantities should be determined according to sand properties, binder supplier recommendations and required core strength.

Insufficient or excessive binder can adversely affect core strength, gas generation, operating costs and casting quality. Regular checks and calibration of dosing equipment are therefore important.

How Does Uniform Mixing Affect Core Quality?

A core sand mixer distributes the binder evenly throughout the sand. Mixing time and batch size should suit the equipment and binder system.

Sand temperature, moisture and the time between mixing and use should also be monitored. Each batch should be sized so that it can be consumed within its usable life.

Can One System Supply Multiple Core Making Machines?

A suitably designed central sand preparation system can supply several core making machines. The number of machines depends on total sand consumption, machine cycles, factory layout and the distribution method.

Machine count alone is insufficient for sizing. Peak sand demand when machines operate simultaneously must also be calculated.

What Should Be Considered When Selecting a System?

System selection should consider batch capacity, hourly sand demand, binder type, dosing method and delivery distances. Whether resin is supplied from drums or IBC tanks also affects storage and pumping arrangements.

Cleaning and maintenance access, recipe management, communication with existing machines and future capacity requirements should be considered during design. Expansion possibilities depend on the system’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
