What is a shell core and what should it be like? Properties of cores that resist thermal shock and break down easily after casting.
Shell Core
Shapes placed into mould cavities to create voids in the casting are called cores; the sand parts that form these shapes are called shell cores.
What Should a Shell Core Be Like?
Because it is placed into very hot liquid metal, a shell core must resist thermal shock, breakage, wear and metal penetration, and it must break down easily after casting.
