The Evolution of Cold Box Coremaking Technology

The development of Cold Box technology, advances in binder systems, and its role in series core production.

The demand for fast and repeatable core production in the foundry industry has supported the widespread adoption of Cold Box technology. In this process, core sand is prepared with a suitable binder system and cured with gas inside the core box.

In the widely used phenolic urethane Cold Box process, an amine gas catalyst accelerates the reaction between the two binder components. Curing without the need to heat the core box is one of the process’s defining characteristics.

Technology development focuses on improving binder performance, reducing emissions, and developing materials suited to production conditions. These advances help foundries establish processes aligned with their quality and productivity goals.
